Project General Assessment

The general assessment of the ecological situation in the Kudara test site allows the following evaluation:

    - The mechanisms of ozone depletion over the Baikal region could be well explained with meteorological characteristics;
    - over the six years of satellite observations no major change to the state of the vegetation could be monitored, however as a results of soil deflation there is an indication of impact to forest are, the spatial distribution for the forests further show forest fire and logging areas;
    - this work resulted in an increased knowledge about the seismic situation in the Kudara and Barguzin region from which an increasing threat of Earthquake events is indicated especially Northeast of the peninsula Svjatoy Nos;
    - this work also resulted in mapping of agricultural sites with severe soil erosion dynamics in the Barguzin valley.

In general, the results of this project have tremendous impact on ecological and risk aspects of the Baikal region:

    1) risk prediction (seismological threat assessment around Baikal),
    2) aspects of climate change (e.g. verification of forest fire impact),
    3) forest management (e.g. monitoring of illegal logging) and
    4) regional planning (gas/oil pipeline or transport planning, gold/mineral/diamond exploration, urban development, tourism).

The use of the publicly available space data is however restricted by the current Russian legislation. This causes considerable economic loss for forestry and regional planning issues.
